Increasing the price of petrol is the best way to solve growing traffic and pollution problems. To what extent do you agree or disagree? What other measures do you think might be effective?

Along with the rapid development of urban traffic, certain problems have arisen, one of which is the traffic jam. It has become common to see passengers and drivers having to wait in long lines of buses and cars during the rush hours. Another problem is the pollution from vehicles. I am convinced that a rise in the price of petrol is the best way to deal with these two problems.

Because it is undeniable that private car use is one of the main causes of the increase in traffic and pollution, higher fuel costs will definitely compel drivers to give up driving their own cars and turn to public transportation. Researches reveal that in most cases, a car carries only one or two people, while it occupies almost half the space a bus does. The policy would also help to reduce some unnecessary travelling.

Through the practice of increasing the price of petrol, the government could collect a great sum of money. With the money, the government is able to invest more in the construction of new roads, which can lead to the reduction of traffic jams. The money could also be used to develop cleaner fuels. For example, persuading manufacturers and travelers to adopt electric cars would be an effective strategy for improving air quality, especially in cities.

To sum up, I believe increasing the price of petrol is the best way to solve growing traffic and pollution problems. Other measures include building more roads, giving priority to the development of public transportation, and working out cleaner fuels. However, these methods are not as effective as the rise of petrol price and some of them may need the fund collected from the policy.

In some major cities in my country, China, heavy traffic becomes increasingly problematic to commuters. This situation can be due to the fast pace of urban development.

The migration policy in China leads rural peasants to big cities. Also the convenient modern facilities and business opportunities in urban areas attract young generation in smaller towns seeking a reasonable career. While cities are expanding, the travellers have to cover further distance than they used to. Unluckily the public transport system built years ago is not well functioning. It is at this point that car purchase sounds reasonable. On top of this, the political will of enhancing economy should be responsible for various urban issues including traffic congestion. In order to stimulate domestic consumption, the public are encouraged to own their private cars, but in metropolises with dense population, such lifestyle is hard to be sufficiently supported.

To deal with traffic issue, some actions can be taken. Firstly, satellite cities can be a pragmatic approach to decentralize urban resource, thereby reducing urban population density. These satellite cities featuring self-sufficient can largely reduce daily travel if people are encouraged to live near their workplace or their school. Exclusive avenues for cycling can be set so that short-distance travellers would like to choose riding a bike instead of squeezing in a bus.

Public transport should be improved in terms of route, timing, comfortableness and service courtesy so as to encourage commuters to take. The larger capacity of public vehicles compared with private cars can effectively ease the traffic pressure on city roads.

In contrast, private cars should be discouraged from using for short distance travel. The approaches include charging a high parking fee, more expensive petrol or restricting in driving days.

In most cities and towns, the high volumes of road traffic become a problem. What are the causes of that and what actions could be taken to solve the problem?

(1) With the ever-increasing speed of urban development, the volume of road traffic in most cities and towns has grown out of control. During the rush hour, buses and private cars are always trapped in the traffic congestion where people waste hours every day just because of the poor road condition. This essay will explore the causes of this situation and some possible actions that can be taken to solve this problem.

(2) To start with, the increasing number of private cars is the main cause of traffic jams. With the fast development of social economy, more citizens are able to afford private cars, which bring them great convenience. Instead of taking the sardine-packed buses or the metro to work, people now have the option to commute in their own cars. However, this new trend inevitably worsens the traffic.

(3) Another major cause of the high traffic volume is the over-population in large cities. Offering much more job opportunities with better career development, metropolises such as Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou have attracted millions of people from other parts of the country. Unfortunately, the public transportation systems in the cities are comparatively under-developed and cannot support the booming population, which naturally results in the traffic problem.

(4) In order to alleviate the pressure on road traffic in towns and cities, the following suggestions should be taken into consideration. First of all, the government can discourage the citizens from owing and driving private cars by charging higher fees. In the meantime, the public transportation system should be upgraded so as to increase the total capacity. Moreover, the government can encourage the citizens to take buses or the metro to work by lowering the ticket prices.

(5) In conclusion, the over-crowding of city roads is the result of unbalanced urban development, which can be solved with the joint efforts of both the government and the average citizens.

Solve the Problem of Heavy Traffic?

Nowadays, people in many big cities are complaining about the heavy traffic. It has seriously influenced people's daily life and economic development. To solve the problem, some pieces of advice are put forward. Some people suggest that more streets and roads should be built. In this way,the traffic density can be redncedi hence speeding up the flow of buses and cars. But the new roads and streets will be filled with many cars and buses soon.

Some people advise to limit the number of bikes and cars. This can decrease the traffic flow. But on the other haad, this will affect the consumption and make buses more crowded.

In my opinion, the number of private cars should be put under control. And at the same time, buses should have their own special routes which cannot be used by other vehicles. Besides, underground train and city train should be developed quickly. ( 151 words)

Obesity is a serious problem in many countries, especially in rich countries. Discuss ways to solve the problem. Provide specific reasons and examples to support your answer.

With the advent of urbanisation and the rise in popularity of fast food, there have been accompanying issues with rising obesity rates – especially in developed countries like England and the USA. After providing a careful analysis of why obesity has risen so sharply in these countries, I shall suggest a number of ways in which the obesity epidemic can be ameliorated.

To begin with, it should be unsurprising that fast food is incredibly popular in wealthy countries (like England and the USA). Due to the high levels of development in these countries, consumers possess more money and can therefore consume vast amounts of fast food without seriously diminishing their income. For example, the American Dietary Association found that (compared to the average Indian household), the average American household has a six times larger budget for food per month. Consequently, it is to be expected that obesity rates are much higher in countries with larger amounts of wealth.

However, despite the severity of the obesity problem, there are a number of ways in which developed countries could battle it more effectively. Firstly, developed governments could put far more pressure on fast food outlets to provide healthy alternatives to hamburgers, french fries and soft drinks.

Secondly, public exercise initiatives could be advertised and promoted far more vigorously. Lastly, modules that inform teenagers about healthy dietary requirements could be taught at schools.

In conclusion, although obesity is a serious issue in the developed world, if the above steps are taken, the situation will surely improve in the coming years.

Task 2 Question: Some people think that the government should provide assistance to all kinds of artists includes painters, musicians, poets, however, other people think that is a waste of money for providing this assistance. State your opinion.

To be of assistance or not, it indeed is debatable if artists deserve and require funding by the government. Firstly, I acknowledge that the benefits from artists and poets can enrich our everyday lives in so many different ways; otherwise our life would have been a lot drabber without them.

Any genuine artist most certainly deserves some form of aid and there can not be any doubt about that, however, whether they require government assistance is another issue altogether. Contrary to popular belief it seems to be that not all artists and literary personalities are wealthy, and most renowned personalities are deservedly rich and famous.

While the other large group of artists is neither rich nor famous, they do continue to produce the art works as for the passion and often the passion is what drives them. It would be ridiculous to think that any kind of financial incentives could power their creativity. However, not many of them are able to take up their passion on a full time basis because they cannot afford to. It is import to note that most creative artists are made, and were not born so. It is the vagaries of life & struggles that they have to face which fuels their creativity, in the process they need to mature into renowned to be an artist or a writer. When they do and when their work is recognized, there will not be any dearth of money or fame.

In my opinion, it would be criminal to take away this very drive and shun their creativity. Having said that, I do believe that they need to have some kind of incentives, it can be in the way of appreciation and opportunity to present their talent to the rest of the world. This could be done in various ways, for instance, giving tax incentives to amateur artists and writers or financial rebates in government owned auditoriums to stage their presentations.

In talking about artists in Australia, which has a concrete social security system in place to take care of all kinds of basic needs, any kind of added financial incentives are not only an added burden on the taxpayer. It would be an issue to find out worthy beneficiaries and there will be enough crooks who will misuse any well intended government assistance schemes. Every human being craves for recognition and money happens to be one of the means towards this end, however, as I mentioned in the beginning it is more important to acknowledge their work than provide financial assistance.

On the other hand, as a Chinese, my perception of the government’s assistance is more questionable. Firstly, we need to give artists a definition and how do you classify a person who is an artist. In essence, calligraphy, poetry, music and art they all can be extended to a person who writes well, paints well in his/her Blog. To extend this artist sense further, can we say a singer is an artist? Well, there are many pop song and folk music singers in China. In the same way, a dancer, a talk show’s talent, a movie star, the director, the photographer they can all be artists. And this number of artists would add up to whole population of Australia. How could the Chinese government provide any assistance without any discrimination to those artists in every classification? I personally do not believe our government has enough financial ability to accommodate this wide ganging number of artists.

As a Chinese I can see that in my country, there is still a big gap between the poor and the rich, I would rather government’s financial assistance be directed toward the poor, this does not mean that I would think to provide assistance to artists is a waste of money. My point is that while we can give a true definition of artists, government should use our taxes in a way to be more accountable for.

There is nothing unusual about energy like coals and oils being consumed, principally because economic development depends on natural resources all the time. But what is happening today is extraordinary judged by the standards of the past. It is energy depletion on a massive scale and this problem is so knotty that should deserve our closer heed.

Amongst the diverse factors contributing to the energy crises around the world, government’s short-sighted policies and citizens’ extravagant use of automobiles are probably the two most significant ones. By presuming on their natural resources, quite a few countries, especially developing ones, are eager to develop their economy in order to gain an edge over their rivals. Admittedly, their intensive use of the energy facilitates, to some extent, the developments of other industries in short term. Additionally, the amount of private cars increases at such a breakneck speed that the petroleum used amounts to an intimidating proportion of the natural resources.

The consequences are undoubtedly disastrous for human beings. Although countries can boast their growth of GDP, their citizens have to endure the ever deteriorated environment with stinking gas belching from factories and vehicles, polluted water due to fuels infiltrating underground, even ultraviolet radiation in the absence of ozone layer and, therefore, their quality of life is by no means improved. Also, sustainable development can never come into true in this situation, meaning that our descendants can benefit nothing except sterile land and polluted air and water from their ancestors.

Therefore, our government must take serious steps to attack those problems. The first and foremost is that governments have to reverse their mindset and no longer deem the growth of GDP their first goal. Rather, the betterment of citizens’ quality of life should deserve more attention than the economic growth. Furthermore, the use of private cars should be discouraged by authorities, who must shoulder the responsibility of improving public transportation in order to facilitate people as well as release the burden of energy consumption.

In conclusion, to avoid the phrase “filthy rich” added to themselves, countries must pay more heed to the efficient use of their energy and the issue of environmental protection, while they develop their economy; otherwise, environmental apocalypse and energy crisis are feared to happen in the horizon.

银行场景主要考察银行提供的各种服务,如账户类型、身份确认、存款数量等;

购物场景常考察物品的优缺点和总体评价;

交通场景常考的是交通工具及相关预定信息;

The process of learning and exploring a subject can lead to a whole new way of looking at the world ,and the skills and techniques that you build up can be applied in all sorts of different ways .

在这句话中,“can lead to ”与“can be applied”就是俩个并列的成分。

I was completely taken by the gorgeous sights of New Zealand”在这里“taken”被翻译为征服。

小心听到分数如one thirds1/3,a quarter1/4等。

比如题目___ancient China,那么空应该填used in而不是used by;但是如果题目是__ancient Chinese,那么空应该填used by而不是used in。

In recent years, animal protection has become an issue of concern. People take different attitudes towards the increasing attention and expenditure on wildlife conservation. Some people suggest that the spending should be redirected to helping other fields in society. I agree with the view that the investment in wildlife protection is not worthwhile.

Animals, as a key component of the whole food chain, have a profound impact on the sustainability of an ecosystem. As we known, every kind of animals plays an important role in natural balance. For instance, the demise of any species will lead to the growth or decline of other species. In some extreme cases, some species may at the verge of extinction such as Dodo bird. If people did not take actions to protect wildlife as soon as possible, we humans would be affected in the end.

However, there are more issues that we need to focus in our society rather than protecting animals. In current social context, the primary task is still to improve living standards since there are many people living under the poverty line. Only when people are in a good living condition, can they pay attention to other social problems. Besides, technology and education are another two aspects of governments to concern. These two industries accelerate the development of society, which will provide a better protection for wildlife in turn.

In conclusion, although the animal is a significant part of ecosystem, it is better for governments to invest more finance and resources in other social problems.

As for the interesting animal, I’d like to tell you about the koi fish which is very popular in China, Japan and other Asian countries. As far as I know, the koi fish is colourful variation of the common carp. Some of the major colours are white, black, red, yellow and cream, so they look particularly fantastic.

The koi are hearty fish. They can thrive in cold, fresh waters. And they are opportunistic fish, which means they eat a wide range of food, including insects, fish eggs, juvenile fish of other species and a diverse range of plants. What surprise me most is that the koi fish can live up to 70-year-old, as long as human.

Chinese people feed the koi fish for more than 1000 years. In China, they symbolise bringing good fortune and wealth, that is probably the reason why some many Chinese people like to keep them as pets at home in the tanks or ponds, especially the businessmen. Besides, I once saw a great number of koi fish in the lake of Olympic Forest Park in Beijing, being fed by children and old people. They are very aggressive as they would struggle in water to get the food. Besides, they are quite human-friendly, they even are not afraid of being touched by people in the water.

growing number of people feel that animals should not be exploited by people and that they should have the same rights as humans, while others argue that humans must employ animals to satisfy their various needs, including uses for food and research.

Discuss both views and give your opinion.

Some people believe that animals should be treated in the same way humans are and have similar rights, whereas others think that it is more important to use them as we desire for food and medical research. This essay will discuss both points of view.

With regard to the exploitation of animals, people believe it is acceptable for several reasons. Firstly, they think that humans are the most important beings on the planet, and everything must be done to ensure human survival. If this means experimenting on animals so that we can fight and find cures for diseases, then this takes priority over animal suffering. Furthermore, it is believed by some that animals do not feel pain or loss as humans do, so if we have to kill animals for food or other uses, then this is morally acceptable.

What are the causes of water shortage? Please also offer some solutions to deal with this problem.

Since the beginning of time, water has been shaping the face of the earth. Water sustains human life, our environment and our cultures. But the global demand for water is increasing and the destruction of water-dependent ecosystems has accelerated.

From my point of view, the main reason of scarcity of water resource is the rapid population growth, especially in developing countries. In order to meet the great demand for water, people exploit water resource in various ways. Water supply sources are being stretched to their limits. And surface and groundwater pollution is increasing rapidly. Research indicates that over 1 billion people still do not have access to safe water supplies and over 1.7 billion do not have access to adequate sanitation facilities.

Another reason is the development of industry and agriculture. In some developing countries, some private factories make use of water resource low-efficiently and make much pollution. Irrigated agriculture also contributes to water scarcity. Despite the high yield, irrigation is extremely water intensive. It takes about 1,000 tons of water to grow one ton of grain and 2,000 tons to grow one ton of rice.

Finding solutions of the problem involves the increase of worldwide awareness and international cooperation. Every individual should realize water crisis and save water. As to the government, some effective measures should be taken, including erecting modern irrigation systems and increasing the number of sewage water recycling plants. Building more dams can also be an effective solution. Dams play an important role in detaining the surface rain water flowing from the mountains and would prevent the loss of rainwater straight into the sea.

Nowadays the way many people interact with each other has changed because of technology. In what ways has technology affected the types of relationships that people make? Has this been a positive or negative development?

It is true that new technologies have had an influence on communication between people. Technology has affected relationships in various ways, and in my opinion there are both positive and negative effects.

Technology has had an impact on relationships in business, education and social life. Firstly, telephones and the Internet allow business people in different countries to interact without ever meeting each other. Secondly, services like Skype create new possibilities for relationships between students and teachers. For example, a student can now take video lessons with a teacher in a different city or country. Finally, many people use social networks, like Facebook, to make new friends and find people who share common interests, and they interact through their computers rather than face to face.

On the one hand, these developments can be extremely positive. Cooperation between people in different countries was much more difficult when communication was limited to written letters or telegrams. Nowadays, interactions by email, phone or video are almost as good as face-to-face meetings, and many of us benefit from these interactions, either in work or social contexts. On the other hand, the availability of new communication technologies can also have the result of isolating people and discouraging real interaction. For example, many young

people choose to make friends online rather than mixing with their peers in the real world, and these ‘virtual’ relationships are a poor substitute for real friendships.

In conclusion, technology has certainly revolutionised communication between people, but not all of the outcomes of this revolution have been positive.

These days, many people are afraid of nuclear technology because of the dangers associated with its use. In my opinion, although it is true that nuclear weapons pose the greatest threat to life, the use of nuclear technology for peaceful purposes also carries some serious risks. Nuclear power stations provide an important source of cheap power for many industrialised nations and some developing countries. However, there is always the danger of radiation leaking from these plants. Even though safety precautions are taken, there have been numerous disasters such as the explosion of a nuclear plant in Russia not long ago. Nuclear technology is even used to help cure some diseases such as cancer. Radiation can be applied to the body to burn away cancerous cells. This is, however, a dangerous procedure, and the application of radiation is almost always painful and not always successful. The most worrying aspect of nuclear technology, though, is its use for military purposes. Enough atomic bombs have already been built to completely destroy the planet, and the real danger is that one day some country will start a war with these weapons. Too many countries now have the technology required to make such bombs, and there is currently much debate about how to control the situation. In conclusion, nuclear technology certainly has positive uses, but is, nonetheless, dangerous. However, it would have been better if it had never been used to create nuclear weapons. If life on Earth is to continue.

Some people think space tourism can help to develop countries' economy. What's your opinion? What are the effects?

Background Information

Supportive Argument

Opposite Argument

Conclusion

Fresh water is a necessity in human’s daily life but how to use it varies in different societies. Some people take unlimited water consumption for granted, but others think that it is governments’ obligation to control fresh water as it is limited.

It is true that most residents in developed countries and coastal nations do not need to worry about the shortage of fresh water. Sophisticated infrastructures and sufficient precipitation can guarantee sufficient water supply. What all these occupants need to do is paying the bills. They can use as much water as they want as long as they can afford it. Thus, it is undoubted that some of them hold the opinion that they can utilize the resource freely.

It may be true that many other people do not need to concern about water consumption, but it is also a fact that a large number of inhabitants in many developing countries have no access to clean water because of its scarcity. In those countries, natural environment and climate like droughts have a negative effect on water supply. What makes things worse, the poor situation makes water even more precious. If people use as much water as they want in those areas, it can almost be sure that water supply will fail to meet some people’s daily need. Therefore, it is reasonable that local officials limit the individual water use and punish the people who waste it.

In my opinion, fresh water should not be used without any restrictions. Water supply depends so heavily on natural environment that it can be regarded as limited resource in some countries. Water conservation, whether it is advocated by government or not, is what people should insist on.

Nowadays the jet plane is considered to be one of the most important and influential inventions in the world. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion?

Since jet plane appeared in the 1950s, it has had some revolutionary effects. Many people are of the opinion that it is one of the most important and influential inventions in the world. Some others, however, disagree with them. It seems quite clear to me that one of the most important and influential inventions in the world has been the development of jet plane. My arguments for this point are listed as follows.

One of the reasons is that jet travel brings us great convenience and efficiency. A hundred years ago, it took weeks to cross the Atlantic or Pacific oceans by ship. Today, those same trips can be completed in a matter of hours. One can attend a meeting in Paris and have dinner in New York at the same day. These amazing speeds have changed people's concepts of space. Today the world is much smaller than it was in the past.

Another reason why I advocate the attitude is that jet travel is relatively cheap. An international journey one hundred years ago was extremely expensive. Only wealthy people could afford to travel comfortably in first class. Poor people had to save for years to purchase a ticket, and the conditions in which they traveled were not very good. Today it is possible for more and more people in every country to travel in comfort. Thus it is possible for business people to do business all over the world, for students to attend universities in other countries, and for tourists to take vacations anywhere in the world.

For the reasons presented above, I strongly commit to the notion that jet plane is one of the most important and influential inventions in the world. The speed and low cost of jet travel have changed the world. Individual nations are not as isolated as they were in the past, and people now think of the whole planet as they once thought of their own hometowns.

In my country, a century ago, it was not easy for a child to grow up due to malnutrition and diseases. But today, parents are able to not only guarantee children’s material abundance, but also provide them with qualified education. All these allow children to have more freedom enabling them to have better development.

Admittedly, it seems plausible to assert that children, given the young age, are not mature enough to enjoy much freedom. Obviously, children sometimes lack necessary experience and knowledge for them to make right decision or regulate their behaviors. Without any restriction, they may fail to resist the temptation and indulge themselves with freedom. For example, they are likely to spend all their pocket money on snacks, such as candies and puffed food, which is bad for health, or they waste too much time on watching TV and playing computer games, which squeeze up their time for other more meaningful activities.

However, with parents’ appropriate and effective supervision and guidance, children can benefit a lot from the freedom. It is parents’ responsibility to help children cultivate self-discipline and self-control and teach them how to judge right and wrong. All these are indispensable for children to enjoy freedom. Hence, they are free to explore the outside world and govern their life. The free access to Internet enables them to gain knowledge and make friends; the free choices of study and entertainment help them become independent and responsible. In a word, with the freedom, children are able to nurture many valuable traits and habits.

To sum up, it is beneficial for children today to have much freedom in life.

In many parts of the world, children have more freedom than they used to. Do you think it is a positive or negative development?

Task:International travel sometimes lead people have some prejudices rather than broad minds, why? How to improve the understanding of countries they visit?

Sample answer:

Such is human nature to explore those exotic countries and feel the sense of refreshment. Many people desire to expand their minds and enrich their experience of the world during the process of visiting their dream tourism destination. However, some problems inevitably ensue. Instead of feeling the pleasure of travel, what some sightseers feel are only culture prejudice, conflicts and misunderstandings.

First, historical differences and diverse customs, to some extent, contribute to the bias, misunderstandings and even hostility. A case in point is that eating dog meat is permissble and understandable in some minority areas in China. More precisely, Taiwan people might be quite amazed when hearing or seeing dog meat is edible, for it is illicit and forbidden to persecute dogs in Taiwan. It is conceivable that Taiwan tourists might be quite shocked and disappointed when visiting some Korean minority areas in Mainland in China. People there always take dog meat as delicious foods.

Further, some sightseers’ deeply rooted concept, and diverse life experience account for the appearance of culture prejudice. To illustrate, a kind of benediction like may you children become a dragon might be acceptable in Chinese culture. However, westerns might consider this kind of malediction as a curse for their children, for dragon equals to monster in western culture.

Several methods should be adopted to help tourists minimize the potential culture bias or emotional misunderstanding. Primarily, before paying a visit to one tourism destination, it is feasible to specialize in the customs, histories and local people’s lifestyle. For example, if a western visitor aims to do some sightseeing in the Chinese minority areas like Tibet, it is wise to get to know some taboo, learn some simple minority language and the minority tradition. Also, efforts should be made by those tourists guides or local mass media to disseminate local cultures and popularize some relevant travel taboo. In this sense, people will acquire the first-hand knowledge and thus have a deeper insight into a new country.

Overall, it is no easy task to iron out possible bias and conflicts before visiting some hot scenic spots. However, memorable travel experience favors the orepared minds.

Air travel combined with early retirement and people with money to spend has meant that more and more people can travel the world. Some countries, especially those with famous historical sights and beautiful natural scenery try to attract this large market. While there are some problems that can be caused with all this travel, generally it is a positive thing.

Firstly, consider that all these tourists mean money that governments are eager to tap into. For many countries, tourism is a big part of GDP and without it their economies would suffer. Foreign tourists bring important dollars to the service industry and lots of small shops and vendors.

Secondly, by encouraging tourism governments are promoting their cities and countries. In my country, China, for example, increased tourism and hosting the Olympics has changed people’s perception of our country. At the same time, tourism allows local people to gain exposure to people from other countries, which is also a good thing.

Of course it’s not always a perfect picture. Not all tourists have a good attitude and manners. And in some cases they may even have a negative influence on the local population. But these situations are not so common, and embassies can create tough guidelines for getting a visa. This seems like a reasonable compromise.

To conclude, international travel is a great thing, but it is a privilege that should not be abused. Governments should encourage it, but also put in place measures to keep dangerous people away. This will result in a win-win situation for everyone.

Capital punishment is essential to control violence in society. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Capital punishment is the sentence of death, or practice of execution, handed down as punishment for a criminal offence. The topic, however, remains highly controversial. Abolitionist groups and international organizations argue that it is fruitless in curbing the worst criminal actions, while proponents claim that it is an effective and necessary deterrent for the most heinous crimes. It is necessary to put some thoughts into this issue.

Those who oppose death penalty might doubt the deterrent effect of it. They argue that many criminals may actually find the prospect of the death penalty less daunting (and thus, less effective as a deterrent) than spending the rest of their lives suffering in jail. Death by execution is generally fairly quick, while a lifetime in prison can be seen as a much more intensive punishment.

Other people, however, insist that the worst crimes deserve the most severe sanctions. Capital punishment symbolises the value and importance placed upon the maintenance of the sanctity of sacred human life. Any lesser sentence would fail in this duty. For example, first-degree murder involves the intentional slaughter of another human being. Such a heinous crime can only be punished,in a just and fair manner, with the death penalty.

I, personally, back up the necessity of capital punishment on the grounds that, in addition to the argument in the preceding paragraph, death penalty can help ease the problem of overcrowded prisons in many countries, where keeping people for life in prison contributes to expensive and at times unconstitutional overcrowding. As such, the death penalty may be preferable to life in prison since it helps alleviate a pressing problem in the criminal justice system. It is better to execute those who deserve it than to be forced to release dangerous offenders into society because prisons are overcrowded by people serving life sentences.

Without capital punishment (the death penalty) our lives are less secure and crimes of violence increase. Capital punishment in essential to control violence in society.

To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion?

Model Answer:

Before talking about the essential role of death penalty, you have to think about the meaning, and the purpose, of any kind of punishment. If you consider that the purpose is to prevent the guilty from being nasty again, you can be seduced by an argumentation in favour of the suppression of capital punishment. But you have to think about another aspect of the problem: a punishment is also useful to impress people, to make them fear the law. In fact, let's take the example of a young misfit, which has grown in a violent atmosphere, influenced by older delinquents, etc ... He lives in the streets, he's got no aim but to survive. This is the kind of person who could possibly kill someone for money, or even for fun ... Why would he fear prison? Life would be easier for him there. In addition, in many cases, when you behave normally, you can benefit from penalty reductions. This young misfit needs to be impressed, he needs to know that the law is a frontier. When you cross it, you can lose your life. That is why capital punishment helps keeping a distance between robbery and murder. If you abolish it, you suppress the difference between these two types of crime, which are completely different.

But there is also a limit to define: even if death penalty is unavoidable, it would be a crime to apply it to inadequate cases. If there is no premeditation or past facts which can justify such a punishment, it is far too strict to apply death penalty. That is why the lawmakers have to establish precisely the context in which capital punishment car be pronounced. That is the price to pay to limit violence without using excessive violence.

By punishing murderers with the death penalty, society is also guilt of committing murder. Therefore, life in prison is a better punishment for murderers.

To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Model Answer 1: (Agree)

“Do as I say, not as I do.” This is what society tells us when it punishes murderers with the death penalty. Society tells us that murder is wrong, and in our legal system, murder is against the law. Yet we still see our society kill murderers, and thus we are committing murder ourselves. For this reason, the death penalty should end, and instead murderers should be punished with life in prison.

Society needs to show a positive model of how our lives should be and how people should act. We should always strive to improve our situation, to be at peace and in harmony with others. However, when we kill murderers, we are not working to improve our society. Instead, we are stooping to the criminals' level.

It makes me think about the revenge that came when playing games with my brothers. When we were kids/children, my brother would take my toys, so I would hit him and take my toys back. Then he would hit me harder and take the toys again. Thinking of the death penalty, I imagine a murderer kills someone. Society takes revenge by killing the murderer. This leaves behind the murderer's family and friends, who have tremendous anger inside of them, which they may release onto society. The cycle of killing goes on and on.

Society should not condemn people who are taking the same action that society is taking. Society tells us not to kill, and yet society kills when it exercises the death penalty. Because of this contradiction, we should end the death penalty and instead punish murderers by sentencing them to life in prison.

Model Answer 2: (Disagree)

I strongly support the death penalty for murderers. In today's society, life is very violent. There are many mentally-ill people committing crimes and almost nothing will stop them. We have interviewed captured criminals who say, “I was going to kill him, but I knew that I could get the death penalty if I did. So I just left him there.” Obviously, having the death penalty saves lives and that makes a positive difference to society.

If a criminal does murder someone, and then gets the death penalty, that isn't society's fault. Everyone knows about the death penalty as a punishment for murder. So, the person who murders is really killing himself at the same time he is killing his victim. The murderer has made the choice to die.

It is important to remember that the death penalty is used only for people who have committed very serious crimes. For example, a woman shot a police officer when she was trying to escape from jail. She was already a convicted criminal when she committed murder, and she deserves the death penalty.

People need to accept responsibility for their actions. Punishing murderers with the death penalty is one way that society can help people to realize/realise the consequences of their decisions.

Should capital punishment be a major deterrent to crime?

Arguments

1. There should never be suspicion~ of capital punishment.

2. Murderers whose motive~ is money should not get off lightly. It is absolutely wrong to think professional killers are insane and need hospital treatment.

3. Criminals must be made to see the consequences of their crimes. “An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth” is the very basis of justice.

4. Capital punishment is more hmnane because the criminal does not suffer the torture of life imprisonment.

5. Only the return of the death penalty can ensure that people can sleep safely in their beds.

6. Murderers are not humane and, therefore, they cannot expect to be treated as hmnans.

7. Capital punishment should be a major deterrent. Other strict laws should also be put into practice.

8. A hfe sentence is only a nominal sentence. It leaves a chance for the criminal to escape.

9. Those who are lenient to criminals are unkind to innocent people.

10. We shouldn't be blinded by emotional argmnents, which leads to relaxation of harsh laws.

Counter-arguments

1. Capital punishment should not be a major deterrent. Emphasis should be put on the reform of criminals.

2. It has been proved many times in the past that the relaxation of harsh laws has never led to an increase in crime. Therefore, the “deterrent” argument is absurd: capital punishment never protected anyone.

3. Those in favour of capital punishment are motivated only by a desire for revenge and retaliation~.

4. There has been a marked trend in society towards a more humane treatment of less fortunate members. The same attitude characterizes our approach to crime.

5. Suspension of capital punishment is enlightened~, civilized and humane.

6. Crime can only be drastically reduced by the elimination of social injustices--not by creating socalled “deterrents” when the real problems remain unsolved.

7. It is illegal to murder, but are we justified in taking away the life of the murderer? No. Capital punishment helps create a bloody world.

8. He who never errs does not exist. The death penalty leaves no chance for first offenders to reform.

9. Murderers vary. Some kill people only to defend themselves while others are trigger-happy. It is unfair to give the death penalty to every murderer.

10. Some criminals can be reformed if they are handled properly. The death sentence leaves criminals no hope at all.

In this highly competitive world, acquiring a variety of skills has become far more important than ever before. It is argued that people gain more necessary abilities through participating in a variety of group work, compared with the individual one. From my perspective, skills gained from both types of activities are equally essential.

On the one hand, what people are able to learn by teamwork is meaningful. Firstly, by cooperating and working together with other participators, people are able to gain a better understanding of how to collaborate with others, an important quality that can facilitate to achieve career success. Another essential ability people can develop from group activities is communication skill. Whatever the group work is, playing football, basketball or doing a scientific research, it requires participants to communicate and socialize with others from diverse backgrounds especially when they hold different perspectives. People with strong social skills can adapt to a new environment more quickly and are more likely to access good resources from their friends wherever they are.

Nevertheless, the importance of individual activities is not supposed to be neglected and performing a task separately contributes extraordinarily to cultivating people’s critical and independent thinking. Individuals, when completing a mission or project alone, have no one to turn to but are forced to work out the most appropriate method to address the difficulty they are faced with. A person who plays chess game on the computer, for example, needs to consider carefully the merits and demerits of each step so as to win finally even when being at a disadvantage. It can help people better deal with their adult life for the thinking ability is one of the most indispensible qualities to deal with various challenges encountered in both workplace and daily life.

In conclusion, both working as a number in a team and completing a task individually are advantageous since only in this way can they grow into well-rounded individuals who have a wide range of interests and skills.

The bar chart compares 4 categories of domestic waste in terms of their recycling proportion in one specific city over a decade from1992 to 2002.

Generally, it can be seen that the household sectors had relatively low recycling rates in 1992 especially for plastic as merely 11% of it was collected. The remaining three kinds of trash including cans, paper and glass stood at an almost equal percentage 13%.

Five years later, the situation turned better off. There was a moderate increase in the amount of plastic and paper reused. While the rise was particularly noticeable in glass which nearly doubled in its recycling, a slight drop was actually found in cans.

The following half decade witnessed an overall upward trend except plastic which kept constant at about 12%. More cans and paper were recycled, with the proportion reaching more than 20% and almost 30% respectively. Also noteworthy is that glass remained the principal waste materials, approaching to as high as one half.

Overall, the gap between these waste recycling had enlarged in these years and while the vast quantities of glass and paper were recycled , plastic and cans remained unpopular.

Nowadays, many employers think that social skills are as important as good qualifications for employing people. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

It is important for job seekers to highlight both their professional qualifications and social skills. Employers are looking to hire those who have the right mix of professional qualifications as hard skills and social skills as soft skills.

(2) Highlight

(3) Professional

(4) Look to do...

(5) Mix 混合

On the one hand, hard skills are most important to any job, and the expertise required to do a job is always listed in job postings and job descriptions. That is why those job seekers with perfect certifications and licenses are preferred by their potential employers, for they indicate that their owners possess the sought-after knowledge and abilities.Without them, landing an interview or even getting past applicant tracking systems will become next to impossible. After all, in the job market, nothing can beat the importance of hard skills.

(2) Expertise

(3) Job description

(4) Potential

(5) Sought-after 急需的

(6) Next to impossible

(7) Nothing can beat the importance of...

Soft skills, on the other hand, are emotional abilities that are useful for an individual to stand out among other job applicants. While hard skills can be learned through proper training, soft skills are harder to develop. And this partly explains why soft skills are extremely valuable these days. Indeed, such emotional traits are so valuable that almost every employer looks for job candidates who are skilled in identifying emotions, using emotions, and regulating emotions. With good soft skills, one is able to connect emotionally with his/her co-workers, clients and superiors as one will look and feel more comfortable and therefore more confident and efficient in job situations.

(2) Stand out 突出

(3) Partly 部分地

(4) Valuable

(5) Identify 识别

(6) Regulate 调节

(7) Superior 上级

In conclusion, the two types of skills are not mutually exclusive as both of them are equally important in the job market. As far as employment is concerned, there is no “either/or” question since the answer must necessarily be both.

(2) Mutually exclusive

(3) Employment 工作

(4) Necessarily

Since 19th century, the availability of workers’ regular leisure time and modern transportation, as the consequences of Industrial Revolution, made it possible for even working-class to afford traveling on weekends or annual leave. In recent years, thanks to the skyrocketing tourist number and poor management, mass tourism has generated much pressure on local environment and culture. It is highly necessary for people to increase awareness on long term sustainable development of local tourist industry.

Admittedly, it is not easy for some travelers to regulate their behaviors due to the lack of knowledge or sense of responsibility. In consideration of the money and time spent, they desire to get the most out of their traveling experience, like taking selfies and enjoying local food. While entertaining themselves, they may ignore how their irresponsible acts bring troubles to others. What local people complain most about foreign tourists usually include damages on environment, noises, pushing and squeezing. Even worse, some photo freaks would like to take pictures of whatever they encounter regardless the signs of “NO PHOTO” and local people’s resentment.

However, the selfishness and irresponsibility shown among tourists ought to be timely corrected and regulated. On the one hand, the local tourism office must implement strict and effective management, so as to protect environment and provide better traveling experience. For example, there should be a maximum number of tourists admittance, according to the carrying capacity of the environment. Also, it is necessary to arrange more staff on spot to keep the environment clean and maintain orders. On the other hand, tourists’ self discipline is equally integral to the healthy development of mass tourism. Although people have paid for their traveling, it does not justify their selfish behaviors. Even better, people can do some research in advance about local customs, especially religious taboos.

To sum up, it is possible for tourists to be responsible and respectful with effective management and conscious self-control. All these are essential for the sustainable development of mass tourism.

In recent years, responsible tourists have paid attention to the preservation of both culture and environment of the places they visit. However, some people say it is impossible to be a responsible tourist. Do you agree or disagree?

A successful person is equipped with diverse qualities such as friendly personality and problem-solving capacity. Some people contend that students fail to learn those qualities in a university or academic institutions. From my perspective, some of qualities can be acquired in higher education.

On one hand, two outstanding qualities could be learned in universities. The first one is to specialize in a certain field. One of aims of university education is to impart professional knowledge and principles to students. In other words, through learning systematic courses of their majors, students are expected to be proficient in understanding and applying theoretical knowledge, forming the basis of a promising career path in the future. Critical thinking ability is another significant quality. Universities are learning communities where knowledge is not disseminated but also advanced. As member of this community, college students are not information recipients; instead, they are encouraged to challenge and think critically to achieve their potential and skills. A case in the point is that, in a language teaching class, the professor may require those potential teachers to discuss the topic that whether situational teaching methodology (which is commonly deemed as a more effective method of language teaching) is better than rote memorization. It is the critical thinking that assists students in having comprehensive coverage of issues and overcoming obstacles efficiently.

On the flip side, other qualities successful persons have can not be gained in academic institutions, among which the essential one is the higher level of social skill. Generally, there is no relevant curricula set up by universities; in consequence, it is less likely for students to enhance such skill via knowledge learning. What’s more, self-study and independent learning, which serve as the backbone in university campus life, diminish the opportunities for learners to interact with peers and mentors. In addition, kindness, mercy, modesty, integrity and other noble characters are mostly formed by parents’ guidance and role models rather than university education.

In conclusion, as far as I am concerned, higher education cultivates students into specialized talents and develops their critical thinking, enabling them to obtain several but not all qualities that a person needs to become truly successful.

Some people think the qualities a person needs to become successful in today’s world cannot be learned at a university or similar academic institutions. To what extent do you agree or disagree.

Success, an expected good result that a person may reach, is dedicated by various qualities including personal characters, knowledge accumulation, and cooperative spirit. That universities or colleges could educate such qualities for a person to succeed is a too narrow belief.

To begin with, individual personalities and characters are the initial keys to potential achievements, as the road to success is full of thorns, requiring the person to be prepared for optimism, calmness, and perseverance to strike the hedge and step forward to the established goals. These characters, in fact, are formed based on the influences from families, schools, and wider societies during the self-development process, which cannot be learnt at once or in any single place.

The second key is knowledge base. Knowledge is widely regarded as one of the most powerful competences for a person to make a difference, but knowledge and information storage is built and developed in accumulation, starting from antenatal training, then to babbling, and moving on to receiving basic educations at primary and secondary schools. In other words, learning knowledge needs a solid foundation. Without the paved footstone, university and academic study would be as unrealistic as a castle in the air.

Further, the sense of being collaborative plays an indispensable role. Only when an individual learns and knows how to effectively interacts and coordinates with others at growth can he or she acquire parents’ support, teachers’ guidance, and friends’ coordination---the important sources to help the person to become successful. Thus, it would be too late if a person starts learning such quality at university.

University education is the final stage of formal learning after secondary schoolings. This means, university is the place where students could further enhance and strengthen the key qualities, regardless of personal characters, knowledge system, or cooperative consciousness via more professional and well-focused instructions and assignments; rather a kindergarten for nurturing baby learners.

The qualities a person needs to become truly successful cannot be learned at a university or similar academic institution. To what extent do you agree or disagree? ?

The purpose of higher education has been a topic of debate for decades. While some claim that there are many successful people without a college degree, I believe education can have an overall impact on one's life.

Completing increasingly advanced levels of education shows that a persor has a drive and commitment to learn and apply information, ideas and theo ries to achieve a variety of tasks and goals. Many employers require col ege-level education, even for roles which previously did not require it, such as administrative assistant positions. It is true that the fewer years of educa tion one has completed, the fewer doors are open to him. Educational re quirements are quick and easy way to narrow down the field of applicants.especially in situations where there are more applicants than jobs. Wher hiring from a field of candidates, employers prefer whose who have com pleted the higher level of education.

More importantly, universities focus on preparing individuals for productive contribution to mankind by the creation of prepared minds. Universities are earning communities where knowledge is not only disseminated but also advancedAs members of this community, students are not information re cipients who acquire the knowledge in a passive way; instead, they are challenged to achieve their potential and indeed to excel. Therefore, univer sities provide learning conditions that encourage students to remain curi ous, to value diversity in opinions and perspectives, and to think critically and communicate effectively. In this way, students can gain problem-solv ing experience and confidence, which contributes to the development of their abilities and personalities.

Being successful without the experience of going to a university is possible, out to most of us the pursuit of educatión is paramount to our future success in today's world.

The qualities a person needs to become truly successful cannot be learned at a university or similar academic institution. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

The chart below shows the average time 16-22-year olds spent on playing video games in four different countries between 1992 and 2002.Summarize the details. Select and report the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

让我们先来看一下3w(when, where, what)。

The bar chart compares the amount of time spent on video games on average by youngsters aged between 16-22 years old from four countries in two years 1992 and 2002.

It is evident that in 1992, the largest amount of time (85 hours) allocated to video games was from young people in country B. This was narrowly followed by country C and country A where respectively 78 hours and 76 hours were spent while it took the minimal hours for this age group to play video games in country D, standing at merely 50.

These youngsters increasingly relied on video games to relax themselves as there was an overall upward trend in total time ten years later. A two-hour rise could be noticed in both country A and country B, with the latter one still ranking the top. Despite of a considerable increase by 8 hours, video games still attracted the least attention of young people in country D and it is country C that was the only one which witnessed a slight drop by 1 hour.

In summary, in three of the four countries, teenagers and younger adults tended to devote more time playing video games over the decade.

Many employers think that social skills are as important as good qualifications for employing people. To what extent do you agree that social skills are as important as good qualifications for success in the job?

Regarding how social skills and qualifications contribute to a person's success in the career, I think both factors are equally important.

Academic qualifications cannot be acquired without many years of study and continued practice, so they reflect a person's academic background and mastery of specialized knowledge and skills. Many employers require job applicants to possess a certain level of qualification, which is an important criterion to evaluate whether the applicant is qualified for the position or not. Therefore, a high-level academic qualification obtained in a renowned university can bring a person more opportunities in the/job market and a good starting point in his or her path towards career success. In addition to this, people have also become increasingly aware of the importance of social skills in the workplace. Those with sophisticated social skills can develop and maintain good relationships with colleagues. With mutual support and active interaction, employees tend to have higher efficiency and enjoy their working lives. This is particularly important in today's society, where employees often face complicated tasks that require close cooperation among different departments. Also, good social skills enable/people to establish wide connections at work and in life, directly associated with their performance in some occupations. For example, a sociable salesman, even though he may not possess very high qualification, can sign more contracts than those who are not good at Socializing with others.

Overall, there is no doubt that good academic qualifications are important in job-hunting and personal development. However, since communicating and cooperating with others have become an essential part in the workplace, social skills should also be highly valued.

P1:引入话题+给出自己的答案(反对这个观点并且提出自己的观点);

academic institutions.

Some companies attach equal importance to both social skills and academic qualifications when hiring new employees. In my opinion, education is the main prerequisite for achieving a successful career in this knowledge-intensive world.

First, higher education provides the basis for accessing top companies. It is not difficult to understand that job seekers must spend considerable amounts of time, money and energy to obtain their professional qualifications. This is why most employers value academic qualifications, as such eligibility means applicants have mastered more precise and professional knowledge. Without this competence, no chance could be acquired to enter the interview level. Second, after they are employed, expertise obtained from alma mater can make them work more efficient. For example, once a candidate from a normal college becomes a teacher, solid foundations like teaching methods and educational psychology helps him easily adapt into the workplace.

Nonetheless, I also have to insist that social skills do play a very important role to support one’s career success. For example, some interior designers with great interpersonal skills can accurately figure out what their customers like in their future home, including stylistic preferences, color matching and decorations. Furthermore, such tendency can hardly be learned through attending academic institutions. In addition, team spirit is indispensable during one’s career. Due to globalization, many successful cases are achieved because of cooperation. Hence, better social skills add positive opportunities and great possibilities for most individuals’ success.

In conclusion, academic qualifications and social skills are essential for a bright career. However, in terms of importance, the former is more vital than the latter considering the competitiveness in the labor force.

Nowadays, education overseas has become more accessible and growing numbers of people send their offspring to study in other countries. However, this trend has its detractors.

I strongly believe that the pros far outweigh the cons, and will examine both below.

Model Answer:

One of the greatest advantages is that the children learn to be independent. Having to cook, clean, and pay bills instills this in them. Often they have to work part-time to make ends meet, and this impresses upon them the importance of work and money management.

Another important factor is that these children will be exposed to different cultures and ways of thinking. They will become more open-minded and tolerant and are likely to become more adaptable individuals.

One of the main motives for sending young people abroad to study is that it enhances their employment prospects. In my experience of living in foreign countries and speaking to various youths, it seems that a foreign education is regarded as something desirable and helpful in getting a decent job. A degree from Britain, for example, is seen as being of a higher standard than one from a developing country. Furthermore, living in a foreign country may lead to fluency in a second language, which is another selling point for prospective employers. In addition, many companies are keen to recruit people with a global outlook.

There are a few drawbacks however. For instance, without parental supervision, the new found freedom children experience may lead to harmful practices such as drug-taking and drinking. Reluctance or inability to reintegrate into their mother country is another. To sum up, it can be seen that the advantages of studying abroad for children are more numerous than the disadvantages. Of course a lot depends on the age of the child, but I believe that for most teenagers it would be a positive experience.

The last decade has witnessed the tremendous growth of e-commerce, which is clearly manifested by an increasing number of people shopping online. Gradually, online stores boasting unparalleled advantages have changed people’s purchasing behaviors and tend to replace physical stores. In my mind, this is a positive change in general.

Admittedly, online stores’ strong momentum of development will erode the business of traditional stores and even pose threat to their survival. Compared to online stores, physical stores have much higher operation costs, mainly including rents and employee salaries. With too many consumers attracted to online stores, physical ones have to face the decline of business volume. Consequently, due to the shrinkage of business, they have to lay off redundant employees, reduce orders with suppliers and even fail to make payments with business partners. In fact, there are many physical stores that have to struggle on the edge of bankruptcy.

However, as online stores can not only play the role of physical stores in both people’s daily life and economic development, but also bring more benefits to social progress, to replace some physical stores is a positive trend. Without leaving home, people are able to make a perfect order by choosing from various kinds of commodities and comparing their prices and performance. Breaking the restriction of time and space, online shopping in fact encourages people to buy more by making it much more convenient and flexible. The increase of people’s purchase will in turn promote economic development by generating job opportunities and tax revenues.

To sum up, although the negative impact on physical stores generated by the thriving of online shopping may cause problems in short term, the replacement of physical stores is a positive tendency in general.

In some countries young people are encouraged to work or travel for a year between finishing high school and starting university studies.

Discuss the advantages and disadvantages for young people who decide to do this.

Model Answer:

It is quite common these days for young people in many countries to have a break from studying after graduating from high school. This trend is not restricted to rich students who have the money to travel, but is also evident among poorer students who choose to work and become economically independent for a period of time.

The reasons for this trend may involve the recognition that a young adult who passes directly from school to university is rather restricted in terms of general knowledge and experience of the world. By contrast, those who have spent some time earning a living or traveling to other places have a broader view of life and better personal resources to draw on. They tend to be more independent, which is a very important factor in academic study and research, as well as giving them an advantage in terms of coping with the challenges of student life.

However, there are certainly dangers in taking time off at that important age. Young adults may end up never returning to their studies or finding it difficult to readapt to an academic environment. They may think that it is better to continue in a particular job, or to do something completely different from a university course. But overall, I think this is less likely today, when academic qualifications are essential for getting a reasonable career.

My view is that young people should be encouraged to broaden their horizons. That is the best way for them to get a clear perspective of what they are hoping to do with their lives and why. Students with such a perspective are usually the most effective and motivated ones and taking a year off may be the best way to gain this.

Some people believe governments should spend money on saving languages of few speakers from dying out completely. Others think this is a waste of financial resources. Discuss both views and give your position?

Today, the death of rare languages has been a heated social issue in debate. Some people think the help to save these languages from dying is useless and no more than a waste of money. In my view, I partially agree with this assertion, while I believe it overlooks the values of less-known languages.

Admittedly, there is always assertion that less well-known languages should not be saved, because their death can facilitate the information exchange worldwide. In an age of deep globalization when cross-border business like import and export, international traveling and meetings are thriving, language diversity is considered the barriers of global communication, for the reason that the repetitive information translation between different languages not only wastes the time and costs of communication, but also makes too many misinterpretations between countries. On this level, the replacement of small languages by globally popular languages is acceptable, in terms of the fact that their extinction can have positive effects on eliminating the misunderstanding and cultural conflicts internationally, as well as speeding up country-to-country trades and information communication.

The second reason of refusing this language-saving policy is that saving a language is not about the language itself, but about the culture behind it, and it is unwise to waste money in fighting a cultural war that will be definitely lost. Obviously, any areas nowadays are dominated with English, a global language. For example, it is overwhelming in airports, mass media and the Internet. Besides, people, especially the youth, have been obsessed with English-based entertainment like Hollywood movies, rock music, NBA and fictions of Harry Potter. Therefore, under an intensive invasion of global pop culture, no matter how much money and social resources a government wants to invest in saving the indigenous language, the result will be certainly failure, because the decline of local culture is unstoppable and irreversible, thus leaving the relevant less-known language no space for survival.

However, there are two main reasons of approving of preserving endangered small languages. Firstly, minority languages can be indispensible materials for academic studying. Different languages have contained different information about history, culture or even beliefs. Therefore, preserving minority languages offers great materials for people to learn from their ancestors and history. For example, linguistics and archeologists may figure out some importance facts about migration and change of the weather in ancient time by studying the change of certain minority languages.

Besides, this measure manifests an important belief of modern society: respect the minority. This is a fundamental principle for a democratic society. The reasons why we need to save the minority languages is not just because these languages are useful for all mankind, but also for delivering respect to the minority who speak these languages since they were born.

In conclusion, advantages caused by the death of rare languages are over the disadvantages. Although saving them can make contributions to recovering the information in old history and building up friendship with minorities speaking them, their death is unavoidable, for the reason that small languages are unsuitable for the in-depth globalization, and the culture environment back them up is gradually disappearing.

Economic globalization benefits the world immensely, especially the prosperity of tourism. As a result, the cultures, languages and customs in the minorities are not mysterious to the world any more, which should be attributed to the popularity of tourism. (39 words)

It is a consensus that tourism can stimulate the economic development in a region, since tourism plays an important role in the acceleration of the improvement of service, such as transportation, accommodation, catering and other marginal business. With a view to attracting more tourists, the minority regions have to consider how to improve their image and service, during the course of which they can have an overall plan to promote the status of their region. Nowadays, many people travel for minority regions to satisfy their curiosity, where they can have unexpected findings. (92 words)

Furthermore, tourism can strengthen the inter flow of cultures and traditions between the people indifferent regions. Trips to minority countries and regions render people a lot of new cultures and customs, which, presumably, have been handed down from old ages and enjoyed very splendid history.Formerly, people can only get some segments about the minorities from videos, films and other incomplete descriptions on books. Now,tourists have more opportunities to communicate or even live with the minority people and acquire first-hand knowledge about them, which provides the researchers with a lot of authentic information.(94 words)

Admittedly, tourism damages the natural environment in some minority regions and spoils the peaceful life of them to some degree due to their frequent activities in the minority regions, the environment being deteriorated in some regions, which is not what we expected. (42words)

Generally, the popularity of English and tourism brings more advantages than damage to the minority regions, since it has enriched people’s knowledge and widened their horizons. But meanwhile, we should be on the alert for the damage to the minority regions and take effective means to tackle the problems tourism arouses. (49 words) (316 words totally)

“Some people think that it is a waste of money for the government to invest in protection of minority languages. To what extent do you agree or disagree?”

大部分人给出的理由都是,language is an integral part of a culture. (close/intimate relationship)

(lifestyles and customs)

(Lifestyles and customs of a people can be reflected in a language.)

(live in extremely frigid areas)所以在他们的语言中,一种有14种词汇(the words used to denote ice)用来描述冰,其中8种来描述“纯冰”,剩下的六种描述不同状态下的冰(ice in different shapes),他们通过描述的语言,就会知道冰的状况,帮助他们决定如何出行。

(By studying the variations of one word in a language, we can study the history. (The language is crucial to mirror the importance of different life elements to a culture.)

(A language can help us to know the process of a stereotype forming.),可以帮人们了解不同词汇对不同民族引起的不同心理反应。

(Black is an adjective associated with many negative words.) (Thus, it partially contributes to gender inequality. People judge others by their skin color.)

Some people prefer planning the future while others argue that we should focus on the present. Do you agree or disagree?

The present is where everything begins and there is no time like the present. Without being prisoners of the past, winners prefer working in the changing present toward the unpredictable future. The trouble with some people is that they are planning only for the unforeseeable time to come and not facing the reality now.

Paradoxically, the future is now. It is more realistic to regard life as an awareness of the present rather than a prediction beyond knowledge. Since the future is anybody's guess, “one today is worth two tomorrows,” to quote Benjamin Franklin. Therefore, the way we live and the way we work ought to keep in step with the present leading to the future. The logic may be that we can only learn from the past, and on the other hand the future does not affect us now as much as does the present. It also makes sense that the way to plan tomorrow is to enjoy living and working as wisely and beautifully today as possible.

Our argument for focusing on today may as well be based on the fact that the present does not sit still for a portrait, but is changing constantly. Change being the law of life, concentrating our mind on what is happening in the present is probably more true to life than dreaming of the future. It means that life for us today is always becoming and never being. Obviously, today has its own problems to be solved, so there is no need to be over troubled about the future. Accordingly, it is better not to foresee the future but be concerned about taking care of the present. It is one thing to prefer planning for the future, but it is quite another to control the change that follows soon enough.

Focusing on the present is more important than merely planning for the future because right now is one of the moments we are influencing our future. Practically, we should see the future in the present which carries more weight in real life. It stands to reason that the future actually begins now.

Nowadays, men and women in many countries decide to have babies at an older age. What are the reasons? What effects does this trend have on society and family life?

比如表达并列关系的常用逻辑关系词有and, furthermore, more than that…表达转折关系的逻辑关系词有 although, however, on the contrary….

Task:A family has a great influence on children's development, but the outside of home plays a bigger part in children's life. Do you agree or disagree?

The development of children depends on many factors, including parents, school education, media, peers and so forth. personally, I agree that the family is less influential than other aspects working together, and my reasons would be explored as below.

Admittedly, the influence of family on children is very deep, because parents, primary teachers in the life of children, set the first role models for them to learn and imitate, and which would be logged into the impressionable childhood mind and determine basic behaviors and thinking of them. For example, by observing and learning the daily activities of parents, like speaking, cooking and house cleaning, washing hands before eating, a child can master the language, self-care ability and hygienic habits. Besides, parents also play a key role in developing the intelligence of children. For instance, with day-to-day teaching, communication and storytelling, a parent can help a child to improve cognitive skills like basic mathematic calculation, memorizing, reading, and thinking and judging in a proper way.

However, I strongly believe outside-of-home elements make greater contributions to the overall growth of children. Firstly, in terms of academic education, teachers in school have priority over parents. For example, compared with some parent who have low-level or even no education, teachers are professionally educated and trained in formal university, and well-experienced in teaching. That is to say, school teachers are more advantageous and influential, in terms of comprehensively and accurately instructing, explaining and demonstrating common knowledge about laws of nature and universe, theories and formulas of math and physics, and events and people in history. What is more, forming social skills also relies on a school environment where children have opportunities to communicate, play and argue with other peers. This strong interpersonal interaction can make children proficient in real-world socialization.

Besides, mass media is another external factor affecting children’s development. For example, violent video on the Internet, TV programs and computer games are very likely to twist social values of the young audience, because children, unlike adults, are lack of abilities to distinguish right from wrong. Therefore, with long-term exposure to ill information, children would be rude, aggressive and self eccentric. As a result, they, more often than not, consider violence as the main or even only way to solve problems, thereby leading to school bullying.

In conclusion, when it comes to the importance in influencing children, other aspects like teachers in school and media override the parents, for the reasons that the formers have incomparable effects on the education, social skills and personalities of children.

The topic concerning children’s education and development has provoked a heated debate over what factor influences a child’s growth most. Some people assert that family plays the most significant role, while others deem other factors, such as TV, music and friends, more influential in a child’s development.

In this essay, both opinions will be discussed and so will my personal view.

People who think that family is the most influential factor in a child’s upbringing may agree that parents usually establish and maintain an intimate relationship with their children, directly creating the environment to nurture a child’s personality and habits.

Eloquent and sociable parents tend to pass on their energy and cheerfulness to their offspring, while parents with severe drinking problems might bring up children with alcoholism and aggressiveness. Besides, it is widely perceived that parents’ financial condition, educational and professional backgrounds, and even social connection will invariably benefit or limit a child’s choices and decisions on his education, occupation, personal preferences and social activities.

However, some people believe that other non-family and external factors, such as media, hobbies, and friendship exert a stronger impact on a child’s development.

Those factors function in a way that is not replaceable by family education. Media such as the Internet and TV provide access to a huge amount of information and knowledge which are not always available from school work or bedtime stories. And those information enables children to have a better understanding of the world and themselves. Friends and peers, on the other hand, are the trusted confidants for a child to share his or her feelings, opinions and values which are not always understood or appreciated by family members.

In my personal opinion, family wields a more enduring and profound power in a child’s entire lifetime. As discussed previously, not only parents’ professional, educational and social backgrounds but also their attitude towards society and vision of life would always contribute to a child’s perspective and action. Parents with well-paid and socially recognized jobs may find it easier to provide financial assistance, intellectual guidance and social connection for their children to obtain better education and a brighter career prospect. When a child comes across troubles, family is always the first option to turn to since it offers unconditional mental and material support.

play the most significant role

an relationship with 与...的关系

it is widely perceived that 人们普遍认为

find it easier to do...

Today, more fathers stay at home and take care of their children while mothers go out to work. What are the reasons? Do you think it is a positive or negative trend?

范文

In recent decades, there has been gender convergence in terms of fathers taking on caregiving and mothers taking on breadwinning. The reasons are a bit more complex and mainly associated with a shift in gender roles and illness.

Firstly, equal rights movements can account for this change, and also have spoken for women to gain qualifications and pursue a career. As women are becoming more and more important in every way, they are ambitious for success and social recognition as much as males, then trying to split home and work tasks more evenly. When the fathers who were traditionally expected to be sole breadwinner see the change, they are then starting to convince themselves to accept it, which becomes a kind of self-reinforcing. Besides, illness may also lead to the trend. Commonly, stay-at-home fathers tend to be older than their counterparts, with the majority of them being 35 or even older. That is, having taken on the role of financial support for many years, they have suffered a lot, both mentally and physically, with illness and disability, such as having server insomnia or with a prosthetic, which forces them to make the decision.

I consider the change to be a positive trend. On the one hand, we should be optimistic to live in a society in which men and women have equal opportunities, and in which mothers are not put under stress to make sacrifices for their careers, especially after childbearing. It finally has become reasonable to make the decision on who works and who stays depending on the personal preference and based on who can earn the most money. On the other, it also seems fair enough that men are given the chance to leave their jobs and shoulder childcare responsibilities. In this case, they can become more involved in the life of their children, attending the meeting with teachers in school and going camping to explore the nature. Then, it will sharpen a child’s good personalities and characters that mothers cannot help with.

In conclusion, the changing roles of men and women are a result of merging trend in society, and I believe this trend has a positive effect on the family as well as their children.
